The literacy narrative was definitely the easiest piece to
write this semester. Unlike all the other assignments, the literacy narrative
made you recount on your own past experiences without having to analyze very
much. I began planning this by creating a list of all the literacies I
encountered in my life and how they affected my writing skills. Because of the
structure and evidence we used in this assignment I found this very easy to
create a structure with flow. I arranged it chronologically that to me made a
lot of sense and created a solid piece to me.
However with this assignment I did struggle with trying to analyze how
the people and experiences affected my literacy skills. Despite the ease of
drawing on past experiences, it does not come to easy trying to recall how my
literacy skills, especially with how long ago some of these experiences were.
The feedback I received from this piece, from both peers and
professor, was overall very positive. With regards to the peer reviews I
received A’s and B’s from the reviews and was told that my analysis was very
good and that the piece was easy to follow, significantly showing how my past
experienced affected me. Furthermore, they added to this that it was easy to
see how I had developed and declined as a writer. The professor’s feedback
complimented many of the points that I received during the peer reviews,
emphasizing the analysis was solid and explained my growth and decline as a
writer. However, both the professor and the peer review had the same main criticism.
The main worry was that I did not have enough examples. The examples that I
used were good, although, the main query was that they wanted to see more
examples to further reinforce my ideals.
I believe there were two main strategies in this piece to
create a solid assignment. The first strategy was being able to recall and
develop past experiences. In order for this assignment to even be started there
was a premium on being able to remember the experiences in your life that were
closely related to literacy. Secondly, I feel there was a prime on being able
to analyze and identify these experiences I just discussed. Identification was
important to the assignment, as much as certain experiences did not appear so,
they were related to literacies. Many people may blow over the idea of reading
magazines or fairy tales but these could have been important to literacy
development, and without being able to identify this many people could blow
over this. Developing on this, if people are unable to know what these
experiences did it is just as pointless. So, for me an important strategy was
being able to analyze how the experiences led to an enhancement of your skills
or even a decline.
